Bedroom blinds & shutters

Better control of light. More privacy. A calmer bedroom.

Bedroom window treatments have to work differently from many other rooms in the home. You may want greater darkness at night, privacy from neighbouring homes and flexible daylight during the day — while still choosing something that feels right with the rest of the room.

Choosing for a bedroom

Think about the room at night and during the day.

Bedroom blinds are often chosen around sleep, but darkness is only part of the decision. During the day you may want natural light, privacy from nearby properties and a window treatment that works with the rest of the bedroom.

Different products solve those needs in different ways. A blackout roller blind can provide strong light reduction, shutters give particularly flexible privacy, Roman blinds introduce softness and cellular blinds can combine a neat appearance with useful light and thermal control.

The best answer depends on the window, where the room faces and what matters most to you.

You do not need to decide whether you want a blind or shutter before we arrive.

Your design consultant can see the bedroom and windows, discuss privacy and light control, show suitable samples, professionally measure and help you narrow down the options.

Before choosing the product

Four questions help narrow the options quickly.

A bedroom window facing east, a street-facing bay and a roof window can all need very different solutions.

01

How dark do you want the room?

Some people simply want to reduce unwanted morning light. Others want the strongest possible light reduction and may benefit from a dedicated blackout solution.

02

Is the bedroom overlooked?

Ground-floor, street-facing and closely overlooked bedrooms may need privacy during the day as well as at night.

03

How does morning light enter?

Window direction can make a significant difference, particularly where direct sunlight reaches the room early in the morning.

04

What should the bedroom feel like?

A Roman blind, minimalist roller, shutters or slatted blind can each change the character of the room as well as the way the window works.

Bedroom window options

Choose around the result you want, not just the product name.

Several products work particularly well in bedrooms. The right one depends on how strongly you prioritise darkness, privacy, daylight and interior style.

01

Blackout roller blinds

A straightforward way to substantially reduce incoming light. Ideal where the main priority is creating a darker bedroom without adding visual complexity around the window.

Strong light reduction Simple Made to measure
02

Roman blinds

A softer, more decorative bedroom treatment. Suitable fabrics can be paired with blackout lining where stronger light reduction is part of the requirement.

Soft finish Blackout lining Fabric choice
03

Cellular blinds

A neat contemporary option with a honeycomb structure that adds another layer at the glass. Light-filtering and stronger light-reduction specifications can be considered depending on the system.

04

Plantation shutters

Excellent for flexible daytime privacy. Adjustable louvres allow you to limit views into the room while retaining useful daylight and keeping the window visually open.

Privacy Adjustable light Architectural finish
05

Wooden & Venetian blinds

Adjustable slats make it easy to change the balance between daylight and privacy throughout the day while giving the bedroom a structured finish.

Roof window blinds

Bedrooms in attic spaces need a blind designed specifically for the roof window. Suitable systems provide secure fitting and controlled coverage at the glass.

The difference is easier to judge when you see the whole room.

Bedroom window treatments affect more than the window itself. They influence how bright the room feels during the day, how private it feels at night and how the finished window works with the bed, furniture and wider interior.

Seeing a window treatment in a finished bedroom gives you a better sense of scale, coverage and how it might work in your own home before you make a decision.

See the whole room Understand how the treatment sits within the bedroom rather than viewing it in isolation.
Judge the light See how window coverage changes the way a real bedroom feels.
Consider privacy Think about how the window needs to work during both daytime and evening.

When darkness matters

Blackout fabric can make a meaningful difference — but the details matter.

A blackout roller blind is one of the simplest ways to reduce incoming light in a bedroom. It can work particularly well where morning sunlight or outside lighting is disruptive.

It is worth remembering that “blackout fabric” describes the fabric itself. A conventional blind can still allow some light around the edges depending on the window and installation. If very strong room darkening is the priority, tell your design consultant so the complete specification can be considered.

01
Strong light reduction

Blackout fabric prevents light travelling directly through the material.

02
Simple operation

An uncomplicated solution for everyday bedroom use.

03
Optional motorisation

Suitable bedroom blinds can also be considered with motorised control.

Bedroom shutters

Privacy during the day without shutting the bedroom away.

Plantation shutters are particularly useful in overlooked bedrooms because the louvres can be adjusted to interrupt views into the room while still allowing natural light through.

They substantially reduce light when closed, but shutters are not a completely blackout product. Where very strong darkness is important, a discreet blind can be considered behind the shutters.

Flexible privacy Tilt the louvres rather than having to cover the entire window.
Daylight control Change the louvre angle as the light changes throughout the day.
Clean bedroom finish Shutters become a structured part of the window rather than hanging in front of it.
Additional blackout option A discreet blind can be considered behind shutters where stronger darkness is required.

A useful starting point

Start with the problem you most want to solve.

These are not rigid rules, but they can help narrow which products are most useful to compare during your appointment.

If darkness matters most

Prioritise light reduction.

Consider blackout roller blinds, lined Roman blinds, suitable cellular systems or dedicated roof-window blackout options. If you choose shutters, discuss combining them with a blind where stronger darkness is required.

If privacy matters most

Choose something adjustable.

Plantation shutters, wooden blinds and Venetian-style products let you alter the angle of the slats or louvres, making them useful where daytime privacy is as important as night-time coverage.

If the room design matters most

Think about texture and proportion.

Roman blinds bring fabric and softness, shutters create a more architectural window, while rollers and cellular blinds tend to give a simpler contemporary finish.

Bedroom blinds FAQ

Useful answers before you choose.

The right answer depends on the window and what matters most in your bedroom, but these are some of the key questions.

What are the best blinds for a bedroom?
There is no single best blind for every bedroom. Blackout roller blinds are useful where strong light reduction is the priority, Roman blinds provide a softer decorative finish, cellular blinds give a neat contemporary option, while shutters and Venetian-style blinds provide particularly flexible privacy and daylight control.
Do blackout blinds make a bedroom completely dark?
Blackout fabric prevents light travelling through the material, but a standard blind may still allow some light around the edges. If achieving the strongest possible darkness is important, mention this during your appointment so the complete window specification can be considered.
Are plantation shutters good for bedrooms?
Yes. Plantation shutters are particularly useful where daytime privacy matters because their adjustable louvres can limit views into the bedroom while retaining natural light. They reduce a substantial amount of light when closed but are not a completely blackout product.
Can I add a blackout blind behind bedroom shutters?
Yes, depending on the window and shutter design. A discreet blind behind the shutters can be considered where you want the appearance and privacy control of shutters with stronger night-time light reduction.
Are Roman blinds suitable for bedrooms?
Yes. Roman blinds are popular in bedrooms because the fabric adds softness to the room. Suitable fabrics can also be specified with blackout lining where greater light reduction is required.
Can bedroom blinds be motorised?
Yes. Motorisation is available on suitable blind systems and can be particularly convenient where you have several bedroom windows or simply want easier everyday control.
Can you fit blinds to bedroom roof windows?
Yes. Dedicated roof-window blind systems are available. Your consultant can identify the window and discuss suitable light-control options for the bedroom.
Do I need to choose my bedroom blinds before booking?
No. During your free home appointment, your design consultant can look at the bedroom and windows, discuss privacy and light-control requirements, show suitable samples, professionally measure and provide a quotation.
