Transform a quiet corner of your home into a cosy, luxurious reading nook—a perfect space for relaxation and escapism. With careful attention to colours, comfort, and natural light, you can create a retreat you’ll never want to leave. Follow our 2025 guide to learn how!

A modern bookcase filled with colour-coordinated books, small potted plants, and decorative accents like brass bookends. A cosy armchair and a side table sit nearby.

1. Finding the Right Location

A reading nook doesn’t require a full room. Instead, it’s about using a small, thoughtfully chosen space in your home. Consider these ideas:

A cosy corner of a sunlit room with a comfortable armchair, a small side table with a teacup, and a window with elegant shutters. The space is softly lit, with a houseplant adding a touch of greenery.
Find the perfect corner for your reading nook—whether it’s a window seat, a cosy spot in the conservatory, or a corner of your home office.
  1. Corners of Larger Rooms
A quiet corner of a conservatory, sunroom, or living room makes an ideal spot. Add comfortable seating and accessories to section it off.
  2. Home Offices
A plush seating area in your home office doubles as a relaxing retreat after a long day. A well-lit spot near a window is perfect.
  3. Spare Bedrooms
A secluded corner of a guest bedroom can be transformed with a comfy chair, soft lighting, and a stack of your favourite books.
  4. Window Seats
If you have a bay window, turn it into a built-in reading nook with cushions and throws. The natural light will elevate the experience.

2. Using Colours to Set the Tone

The colours in your reading nook set the mood for the entire space. Choose shades that promote calm and focus while reflecting your personality:

A luxurious reading nook with an emerald green accent wall, a sapphire blue velvet armchair, and gold-framed artwork. Cushions and throws in complementary jewel tones complete the space.
Rich jewel tones like emerald green and sapphire blue add luxury and elegance to your reading nook.
  1. Neutral and Earthy Tones
Earthy tones, like warm beiges, soft greys, and muted greens offer a timeless, soothing base. These colours work well in any room.
  2. Pops of Colour
Inject subtle personality with soft accents in muted blues, blush pinks, or mustard yellows for cushions or decorative items.
  3. Monochromatic Palettes
A monochromatic scheme of whites or greys creates a sleek, minimalist look. Layer with textures like wool or linen for depth.
  4. Rich Jewel Tones
For a luxurious feel, incorporate jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire blue, or deep amethyst. These rich jewel colours are perfect for statement walls, velvet armchairs, or accent cushions.

3. Maximising Natural Light

Natural light is essential for a comfortable reading nook, but managing it effectively is key to creating the right ambiance. Here’s how:

A bright room with a bay window featuring a built-in window seat. The seat is adorned with plush cushions and a soft throw, with a book resting nearby. Plantation shutters are partially open to let in soft sunlight, complemented by light-filtering curtains.
  1. Blinds for Flexibility
Roller or Venetian blinds help control light while maintaining privacy. Light-filtering fabrics create a soft, inviting glow.
  2. Shutters for Elegance
Plantation shutters with adjustable louvres allow you to direct sunlight where you need it, adding elegance and practicality.
  3. Sunrooms and Conservatories
In spaces with abundant light, energy-efficient blinds reduce glare and heat. Pair them with curtains for added warmth in the evening.
  4. Artificial Lighting
For evening use, add a floor lamp or table lamp with a soft, warm bulb to create a relaxed vibe.

4. Displaying Your Book Collection

Your library of books is the heart of your reading nook. Displaying them thoughtfully adds both functionality and style:

  1. Built-In Shelving
Built-in shelves make books easily accessible while framing the nook beautifully. Consider painting shelves to match the room’s palette.
  2. Freestanding Shelves
For smaller spaces, opt for sleek freestanding shelves. Arrange books by size, colour, or theme for a neat and appealing look.
  3. Mix Books with Décor
Break up rows of books with small plants, bookends, or decorative accents. This prevents clutter and adds visual interest.
  4. Rotating Selection
Keep your favourites close by curating a rotating selection. Store additional books in baskets, ottomans, or nearby cabinets.

5. Making Your Nook Comfortable

The key to a perfect reading nook is comfort. Here’s how to make it an inviting space you’ll never want to leave:

A cosy nook featuring a deep armchair layered with cushions and a faux fur throw. A small ottoman with hidden storage sits nearby, along with a side table holding a mug and lamp.
  1. Comfortable Seating
Choose a deep armchair, chaise lounge, or window seat with plenty of cushions. Upholstered furniture in soft fabrics like velvet is ideal.
  2. Layered Textures
Combine soft throws, plush cushions, and a cosy rug to create a tactile, warm space.
  3. Footrests and Side Tables
Add a footrest or ottoman for relaxation, and a small side table to hold your mug, glasses, or notebook.
  4. Personal Touches
Incorporate items like framed artwork, scented candles, or a vase of fresh flowers to make the nook feel truly yours.

Conclusion

Designing a luxurious reading nook is about blending style, comfort, and practicality. Whether you choose jewel tones, maximise natural light with blinds or shutters, or personalise your space with decorative touches, the result will be a serene retreat where you can immerse yourself in your favourite stories.

Start creating your reading nook today and enjoy a peaceful haven you’ll treasure for years to come!

Village Blinds and Shutters Home Appointments FAQ

Our design consultant will arrive at the agreed time slot and ask you questions about your requirements and style preferences to help understand your project. They will measure your windows and discuss fabric/material options and provide you with a quotation based on your choices.

Depending on your requirements, a home appointment can take from 30 minutes for 1-10 blinds, to 60 minutes for 10+ blinds or window shutters. Our design consultant will work at your pace and we’re happy to stay longer to talk through your options and provide advice if you’d like.

We would ask ahead of the home appointment that you have arranged clear access to the window areas being measured and that any obstructing furniture or breakables near the windows are removed.

Once the windows are in, plastering has been completed and any tiling or skirting or architrave that might be close to the blinds has been installed. This will allow our design consultant to take accurate measurements.

Usually, our design consultant will be able to provide you with your quotation during your appointment.  Sometimes for some very bespoke projects pricing can take a little longer. If you haven’t heard back within 24 hours, give them a call or email and they will keep you updated.

Our production team work tirelessly to craft every single blind and shutter for our customers individually. Lead in times can vary depending on factors such as material availability and our production schedule. That being said we will always work to get your order as quickly as possible. Ask your design consultant for an up-to-date lead time estimate.
