Much like the great toilet paper debate (over or under?), the question of whether roller blinds should roll forward or backward has baffled homeowners for years. It’s one of those oddly specific topics that sparks surprising levels of passion—because yes, even blinds can be controversial!

So, which way should your roller blinds roll? Well, grab a cuppa, settle in, and let’s explore the quirks and charms of roller blind orientation.

Standard Roll vs Reverse Roll: A Clash of Titans

Roller blinds can roll in two ways:

Standard Roll Roller Blinds

The fabric rolls backward, hugging the window.

Reverse Roll Roller Blinds

The fabric cascades forward, away from the window.

While the standard roll is the fan favourite in most homes, the “right” choice depends entirely on your window, décor, and, let’s be honest, how much you like to overthink small decisions.

Obstacles: The Bane of Roller Blind Installation

Handles and Trim Troubles

Picture this: You’ve just installed your beautiful new blinds, only to realise they’re having an awkward standoff with your window handles. Standard-roll blinds, which sit closer to the glass, can sometimes clash with protruding handles or trim. The solution? A reverse roll gives the fabric a graceful 2-inch gap, clearing obstacles with ease.

Dodging Decorations

Now, if you’re someone who lovingly curates a windowsill display of plants, books, or trinkets, the standard roll might just save the day. Its snug fit keeps the fabric from sweeping your treasures to the floor like a clumsy houseguest.

Keeping Cosy

For the energy-conscious among us, standard-roll blinds offer a subtle but effective boost in thermal efficiency. By snuggling closer to the window, they help seal out drafts—an important perk in the frosty Northern Irish winters.

Fabric Matters: The Great Texture Debate

The fabric of your roller blinds isn’t just about looks; it can also determine which way they should roll.

The Double-Sided Dilemma

Some fabrics are double-sided, making them a dream for indecisive decorators. Both sides look equally lovely, so you can roll them in whichever direction your heart desires.

Lined Blinds: A Surprise Twist

Blinds with blackout linings come with a catch. The lining often has a different texture—or even a stark white backing. While functional, it’s not exactly the statement piece you want on display. In such cases, the standard roll hides the lining, letting the fabric’s design shine.

Pattern Play

If your blinds feature a bold pattern or vibrant colour, a standard roll keeps the design front and centre. After all, who wants a sneak peek of the lining when you can have a full-on fashion show for your windows?

Roller Blinds Made Perfect for Northern Ireland Homes

Here in Northern Ireland, we know a thing or two about weather—and how to keep it outside where it belongs. Whether you’re battling brisk Belfast breezes or enjoying a rare sunny afternoon in Ballymena, the right roller blinds can make all the difference.

Why Northern Ireland Loves Standard Roll Blinds

Northern Irish winters call for cosiness, and standard roll blinds are the unsung heroes of draft-proofing. By snugly fitting closer to the window, they create a better seal, keeping that precious heat indoors. It’s like giving your windows a cosy jumper—practical, stylish, and perfect for our climate.

Reverse Roll for a Modern Twist

If you’re lucky enough to live in a sleek new-build in Holywood or Bangor, you might lean toward the reverse roll. Its cascading style adds a modern touch that pairs beautifully with contemporary interiors, giving your home that “show home” finish without the hefty price tag.

Village Blinds and Shutters Home Appointments FAQ

Not sure what to expect? Here are the most common questions about booking a free home appointment with Village Blinds and Shutters.

One of our design consultants will visit your home during your chosen time slot. They will discuss what you need, measure your windows, talk through suitable blinds or shutters, and provide a quotation based on your choices.

A 1–10 blinds appointment usually takes around 30 minutes. Larger blinds appointments and shutter appointments usually take around 60 minutes, depending on the number of windows and the level of advice needed.

Please make sure there is clear access to the windows being measured. If possible, move any furniture, ornaments or breakables away from the window area before your appointment.

For the most accurate measurements, it is best to book once your windows are in and plastering has been completed. Ideally, skirting and architrave close to the windows should also be finished before blinds are installed.

In many cases, your design consultant can provide your quotation during the appointment. For more bespoke projects, pricing may take a little longer. If you have not heard from us within 24 hours, please contact our team and we will check this for you.

Lead times vary depending on the product, materials and production schedule. Your design consultant will give you the most up-to-date timescale when you place your order.

Village Blinds and Shutters offers free home appointments across Northern Ireland, including Ballymena, Belfast, Bangor, Armagh, Strabane and surrounding areas.

Our design consultants aim to arrive within your scheduled time slot, but traffic or other unforeseen delays can occasionally happen. If you have any concerns about your appointment, please call our booking team on 0800 059 0747.

You can choose a morning, midday or afternoon appointment slot. This gives your design consultant enough time to travel between appointments and spend the right amount of time advising, measuring and quoting for your project.
