What’s the best way to clean vertical blinds?
The safest cleaning method depends on what your vertical blind louvres are made from.
Fabric vertical blinds are generally best maintained with gentle vacuuming using a soft brush attachment and careful spot cleaning. PVC or wipe-clean louvres can usually be cleaned using a soft, lightly damp cloth.
Avoid aggressive scrubbing, excessive water and strong cleaning products. Where possible, start with the gentlest cleaning method and only move to deeper cleaning when necessary.
Check the material first.
Not every vertical blind fabric should be treated in exactly the same way. Identify whether your louvres are fabric, PVC or another wipe-clean material before using moisture or detergent.

Start with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft upholstery or brush attachment. Spot-clean only where necessary.
PVC & wipe-clean louvres
These can generally be wiped carefully using a soft cloth lightly dampened with clean water.

Use the right cleaning technique
Start by removing loose dust. If you have fabric vertical blinds, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush or upholstery attachment and work gently from the top of each louvre towards the bottom.
Avoid pulling sideways against the fabric or using strong suction, as this can distort lighter materials.
For PVC or other wipe-clean louvres, a soft damp cloth can usually be used instead. Again, work from top to bottom to avoid creasing or twisting the louvre.
Clean the headrail and track
Dust does not only collect on the louvres. The headrail and operating track can also collect debris over time.
Wipe accessible areas with a clean, dry cloth. If you need better access, carefully unclip the louvres according to the blind’s fitting system.
If the track or mechanism becomes stiff, a very small amount of suitable silicone lubricant may help. Keep lubricant away from fabric to prevent marks.
Treat stubborn stains carefully
Marks are more common on vertical blinds fitted in kitchens, dining spaces, busy family rooms or areas where the louvres are handled frequently.
Begin with a clean damp cloth. If this is not enough, a small amount of mild detergent diluted in water can be used on suitable materials.
Dab and wipe the affected area gently rather than rubbing aggressively.
Deep clean only when necessary
If spot cleaning is not enough, individual louvres can be removed for more thorough cleaning where their material allows.
Lay the louvres flat on a clean surface. Use lukewarm water, a soft cloth and a small amount of mild detergent rather than scrubbing or immersing the material for long periods.
Work carefully along the length of each louvre and avoid distorting the top hanger or bottom pocket.
Allow the louvres to dry and rehang them correctly
Allow cleaned louvres to dry completely before refitting them to the blind.
Once dry, reinstall any bottom weights, clip each louvre back onto its carrier and reconnect the bottom chain where applicable.
Finally, operate the blind slowly. Check that all louvres rotate together and that the blind traverses smoothly along the headrail.
