5 Essential Care Tips for Composite Shutters | Village Blinds and Shutters ????✨

How to Care for Your Composite Shutters: Top 5 Tips

Composite Shutters From Village Blinds and Shutters
Unlike wooden shutters, composite plantation shutters are a man-made material and are not prone to warping or twisting.  However, like any other product, composite shutters also require some care and attention to keep them in good condition and extend their lifespan.
Whether you have selected Cafe Style, Tier-on-Tier, or Full Height Shutters, here are our top 5 tips on how to care for your composite shutters:

15 minutes

1. Dust Your Shutters Regularly

Dust can accumulate on the slats and frames of your shutters, making them look dull and dirty. To prevent this, you should dust your shutters at least once a week, using a soft cloth, a feather duster, or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment. You can also use a hairdryer on a low setting to blow away any dust from hard-to-reach areas.

2. Use an Eraser for Small Marks

If you have white composite shutters, you may notice some small marks on them over time. These marks can sometimes be removed by gently rubbing them with a good quality white eraser, then using a dry, clean microfibre cloth to finish.

You may notice small black marks appearing over time in specific areas, especially in locations where you are tilting louvres and perhaps if you are wearing rings they are coming into contact with the surface of the shutter. This is perfectly normal and easy to remedy with our eraser tip

3. Wipe them with a damp cloth

Sometimes, dusting alone is not enough to remove all the dirt and grime from your shutters. In that case, you can use a damp cloth or sponge to gently wipe the slats and frames of your shutters. You can also use a mild soap or detergent diluted in water if the dirt is stubborn. However, you should avoid using any harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that may damage the surface of your shutters. You should also avoid soaking your shutters in water, as this may cause them to warp or swell.

4. Dry Thoroughly

After wiping your shutters with a damp cloth, you should dry them thoroughly with a soft cloth or paper towel. You should also open the slats and let them air dry for a few hours. This will prevent any moisture from being trapped inside the shutters, which may lead to mold or mildew growth.

5. Lubricate Your Shutter Hinges

Over time, the hinges of your shutters may become stiff or squeaky due to friction or dust buildup. To prevent this, you should clean off any surface debris and lubricate them sparingly with a silicone spray, making sure to remove any excess lubricant. You should also check the screws and gently tighten them if they are loose.

Village Blinds and Shutters Home Appointments FAQ

Not sure what to expect? Here are the most common questions about booking a free home appointment with Village Blinds and Shutters.

One of our design consultants will visit your home during your chosen time slot. They will discuss what you need, measure your windows, talk through suitable blinds or shutters, and provide a quotation based on your choices.

A 1–10 blinds appointment usually takes around 30 minutes. Larger blinds appointments and shutter appointments usually take around 60 minutes, depending on the number of windows and the level of advice needed.

Please make sure there is clear access to the windows being measured. If possible, move any furniture, ornaments or breakables away from the window area before your appointment.

For the most accurate measurements, it is best to book once your windows are in and plastering has been completed. Ideally, skirting and architrave close to the windows should also be finished before blinds are installed.

In many cases, your design consultant can provide your quotation during the appointment. For more bespoke projects, pricing may take a little longer. If you have not heard from us within 24 hours, please contact our team and we will check this for you.

Lead times vary depending on the product, materials and production schedule. Your design consultant will give you the most up-to-date timescale when you place your order.

Village Blinds and Shutters offers free home appointments across Northern Ireland, including Ballymena, Belfast, Bangor, Armagh, Strabane and surrounding areas.

Our design consultants aim to arrive within your scheduled time slot, but traffic or other unforeseen delays can occasionally happen. If you have any concerns about your appointment, please call our booking team on 0800 059 0747.

You can choose a morning, midday or afternoon appointment slot. This gives your design consultant enough time to travel between appointments and spend the right amount of time advising, measuring and quoting for your project.
